No signals are being replaced as far as I know. Just wires being routed to Chester instead of Hooton SB.

A few new signal ID plates will probably appear with the "CH" prefix.

16 minutes from Central to Aintree, 18 minutes from Central to Kirkby, may be why trains stop at Orrell Park, means minimal tweaking of the service, and if they did non stop, it would cause confusion for passengers, who would see an Aintree train and assume it stops there...

Confusion is the key word here. You'd be amazed how many passengers take no notice of onboard announcements.

I think you will find the over use of the Public address equipment means that people dont listen to it now as intently as it was before . People say here goes another announcement we will just switch off as we have heard this announcement many times before .

Another problem in the Underground i have noticed is the announcements recorded or live become unhearable in the underground if any of the windows are open .
Some unusual workings on 18/2/2013

21:02 Preston to Bank Hall 00:30
via Edge Hill, Hunts Cross, Liverpool Central, Hall Road (reverse), Bank Hall

Passes Liverpool Central at 23:29 (Platform 2)

Diesel locomotive, trailing load 715 tonnes.

Not often you get these running through the Underground during normal operating hours.

Whatever the train is, it is a really bizarre diagram as it originates from Lancaster and subsequently goes via Guide Bridge B'sde Sdgs, Preston Dock St Sdgs and Oubeck Goods Loop.

Probably ballast.

Times may have to be adjusted on the night as it's right in front of the last Hunts Cross to Southport service
The train consisting of 507008 disgraced itself and gained a technical fault today at Bromborough on roughly the 15:45 departure from Moorfields for Chester. Didn't have long to wait for a train to Hooton and another one to Chester.
Thats the usefulness of having a frequent service on the Hooton Line that if your travelling up to Hooton you don't have long to wait with the Ellesmere Port 15 minutes behind .

What does surprise me these days is a 30 min Sunday Service on the Southport line in the Winter , i think in the Summer the 15 minute service is just right , in the Winter maybe a 20 minute service would be useful , with a 20 min service the service could run all the way to Hunts Cross. As with the Hooton line a frequent service does garner passenger support over time maybe not straight away.
Is there currently a speed restriction between Town Green and Aughton Park? The Trains seem to be going slowly for a stretch between these two stations anyone know why?

No. The only speed restriction(s) (ESR/TSR) in place on the Merseyrail network is:

TSR T2011/80889: Signalling - Braking Distance
Overpool to Ellesmere Port
60mph passenger, 40mph freight
2 miles 60 chains to 3 miles 1 chains

TSR T2012/87921: Condition Of Level Crossing
Fisherman Path LC (UWC) to Formby
20mph passenger, 20mph freight
12 miles 10 chains to 11 miles 70 chains

TSR T2011/80898: Signalling - Braking Distance
Hoylake to West Kirby
25mph passenger, 20mph freight
9 miles 49 chains to 9 miles 60 chains

Every train arriving at Ormskirk after 10:15am has been at least 3 minutes early (at time of writing 14:00).
After Town Green, line speed is only 15mph on to the single line into Ormskirk, so if early, probably not much point driving at line speed, only to have to bring it right back down. Line speed is still 20 Non EMU/ 60 EMU though.

There was an emergency speed restriction, but apparently this was lifted this morning. Due to an earlier landslide.
what track work was done yesterday? and also what does the yellow and black arrow striped board mean with the two flashing silver lights?
