Was looking back at old posts from a couple of years back about platform 0 at Hooton. While it is not electrified, it has seen very occasional use.its probably 4 or 5 years back now, but I did board a railtour to Weymouth on that platform

It’s been used by trains from Ellesmere Port docks a few times. I think it was about 12 months ago that one failed there and was rescued the next day
There are 3 class 777s coming from Dollands Moor next Wednesday. One is being dropped off at Crewe and the other two are continuing to Kirkdale. As last week, 2 more are being moved out of Kirkdale for storage the following morning. Unit numbers haven’t been confirmed at the moment.
Noticed quite a lot of planned weekend engineering work due to take place on the network throughout January and February next year.

Are these just routine works or is any of this in relation to upgrading the infrastructure for the new fleet?
Seems an awful lot compared to previous years.

No, nothing to do with the new fleet, just track renewals mostly between Hunts Cross and Hall Road spread over four weekends in January and then work on the loop and the Ormskirk line in February.
Nowadays, work tends not to be done in the busiest traffic periods - Bank holiday weekends, summer months and the run up to Christmas - which leaves January, February, March, September and October to get the work done
I'm interested to know why they are going for lots of smaller closures. Surely they must be able to get more work done on some of the closures and they certainly should have done some of the work during the platform alternations closures as that would have saved/reduced these closures.
Seems a little short sighted. Sure Merseyrail look for reasons to close down the network though. Someone sneezes and they cut back services. It's bonkers.

The only time i remember any engineering work occurring around a holiday period was a bridge replacement at Sandhills which occurred for a few years back.

For some areas of the network like Sandhills to Liverpool Central there is no good time to do any work , and a bridge replacement has to be done in a big bang type of operation.

These closures are not in merseyrail's gift to dish out , Network Rail resources will dictate when they closures do occur , dont forget for some work there is actually a shortage of qualified staff , on top of any coronavirus social distancing and self isolation.
