“Keeping a second member of staff on the train, unnecessarily, will cost over £5m a year or £200m over the life of the new trains - money that could be much better spent on other key priorities across the city region. Interestingly suggestions from the RMT to fund the guards included putting up fares for passengers significantly over and above RPI incremental rises, extending the length of the existing Merseyrail Concession, or asking the Combined Authority to borrow an additional £200m, almost half the total cost of the new trains project - all options that are unpalatable, unworkable and unnecessary."

A bit hypocritical from the RMT - we protest against fare rises but if jobs are at risk the passengers should be made to be pay more.
I don't remember seeing the RMT saying that. They did say that a small amount of Merseyrail's profits each year would pay to keep Guards. That isn't money that would necessarily be spent in the Liverpool city region.

That's a secondary point though. The main point is keeping Guards on trains.

Probably something they would only say in private, just like Northern have avoided saying anything about a guarantee about a second member of staff on board in public. Remember the RMT want their public image to be that are in favour in lower fares but at the same time want to increase staffing costs (they'll want the guards to get a good pay rise every year which will increase the total bill.)
According to another forum the new Stadler units have been allocated the Class 777 designation
Do we know if the new class 777 have started being built yet?
The Class 777s aren't in build yet and I imagine it will still be a good few months away.
A bit late now, but 507001-507008 have now all been fitted with passenger counting equipment above the passenger doors. 507004 had received this modification first some 18 months or so back, with the remainder being fitted two or three months ago.

Yes,they'll probably throw most of the resources onto the Southport to Liverpool South Parkway line to keep that running at the expense of other lines that normally have a limited service during the previous strikes

Especially considering Merseyrail have yet to run out beyond Hooton on any strike days to date.
Dont forget No service has operated on the South Liverpool line either , so maybe the guards that they are using will need some rudimentary route learning.
