I know of a couple of people who have. The response: "no plans". No surprises there.

313201 does look fantastic though having seen it in person a few times.
Currently no service Rock Ferry to Chester / Ellesmere Port due to a trasspasser
No Trains on Boxing Day this year looking on the Merseyrail website

There is a trend here of removing services with no publicity at all.

Summer Sunday 15 minute frequency on Southport line went in 2017.
and peak hour extras on Southport line all vanished a few months ago without any notification.

Plus latest timetables do not give times of any guaranteed 6 car services, so presumably that commitment has also gone.

There was no way of running trains into the underground hence it wasn't thought feasible to run a service this year.

The Wirral line underground is under an engineering possession for platform works from late Christmas Eve until late New Years Day whilst the Northern Line underground is under a similar possession until the early hours of December 27th.

Birkenhead Central has sidings, as does Rock Ferry. You can run Birkenhead Central to Chester/EPort and also Birkenhead North to New Brighton/West Kirby. Even if they just run a small hourly service as they can't run through the loop. Say there are no rail reps but it keeps people moving quicker and keeps some places linked with the majority of areas having little-no boxing day service.

I agree with @L544 that the services are disappearing slowly. It's a shame. The old Merseytravel was so much better. It seems lately they are out to run the services. New trains which are horrid, all the money being spent on full level access (instead of platform humps like London underground). Reducing services at key times and just generally their service standards in more recent times.

They had it perfect. I don't see why they have gone so downhill.

As TfW Rail aren't operating on Boxing Day there wouldn't have been any services to Chester anyway. Also I don't think it's fair in the slightest to say the Class 777s are "horrid" based on the mock up carriage

Platform humps wouldn't have worked because:

1) Merseyrail will be operating Class 507, 508 and 777 trains at the same time until all of the latter have been delivered. The three car Class 507s/508s have different door positions to the four car Class 777s so it would mean ramps designed for the former would be in the wrong position for the latter (and vice versa)

2) The Class 777 door positions will be different between the driving and trailer carriages (centrally on the driving cars and "1/3 and 2/3" in the trailer cars) - this is the case to ensure that eight car trains will fit the platforms of the underground stations. Whilst platform humps would work for a single unit they would not for a pair of 777s as they would need to stop in a different position on the platform to accommodate their longer length

Boxing day is NOT a franchise commitment and makes little to no money believe it or not.
I hate to shatter any illusions but the only reason Merseyrail runs on boxing day is to get people into Liverpool. If that's not possible there's no point in running

Just because one operator doesn't run services, it doesn't mean no one should run them.
The 777 I think is bad and though that is mainly based on the Mock Up, it was really bad. I would prefer a class 700 over the 777 and that is saying something.

Platform humps could still work with all trains working together. You just have to make the hump around 20 metres long. You put it in a place where whatever train you have, there will be at least one set of doors on the 'hump'. Even if that involves moving stopping points. You don't need platform humps for every set of doors, you only need them to link with the wheelchair space doors or at least the carriage with the wheelchair doors.

It must make some money. Stagecoach must make a lot of money or they wouldn't do it. There are people who travel and not to Liverpool. Even a vastly reduced service, people tend to use it over buses for some random reason. I am unsure on the pay agreements regarding breaks etc but Chester - Birkenhead could be done hourly using 2 trains and giving staff 50 mins breaks (30 min breaks if it has to run on the leaf fall timings) in between round trips. I'm not saying it needs full services but the fact Stagecoach are running so many services says there is money to be made somewhere.

TfW Rail operate Chester station. If they're not operating services then it won't open

What was "really bad" about it exactly? I don't understand how you can judge a new train before it's entered service based on a mock up carriage

You would need platform humps for every set of doors because they will have platform gap fillers...

The platforms have been raised to allow level boarding at all sets of doors to allow level access for all passengers
