Two more air con recipients this week are 507010 and 507015. Also, 508110 is back in traffic and was stabled in the Southport wall siding yesterday - the large 'M's in the middle car appeared recently replaced, but not the smaller ones alongside the 'Merseyrail' branding.
It has been revealed that the cost to Merseyrail, per passenger KM is £0.18, which is the second highest in the country, (Northern is £0.19).

So Liverpool-Chester via Birkenhead direct route is 29 km (17 miles), which means that Merseyrail is paying £5.22 per passenger travelling on this route.

So on an Anytime Single at £6.20 the profit to Merseyrail is £0.98. BUT, a child fare would see a LOSS of £2.12, and also a loss of around £1 if a railcard is held.

Merseyrail makes a loss of at least £3.74 on all Liverpool-Chester peak time returns. A loss of £7.09 on child returns.

Obviously a loss on all Saveaways/Day Savers too! Southport-Chester via Liverpool return is one hell of a loss on a Day Saver!

Fortunately for Merseyrail, Merseytravel provide subsidy to cover the losses. However, if Merseyrail was outside the PTE area, you would be looking at around £10-£12 for a return to Chester and probably a lower frequency level.

From what I can gather, should the trains ever go Driver Only and/or Booking Offices converted to TVM Only, the cost per KM is substantially reduced.

I think after recent incidents the Drivers union will have something to say with regards Driver Only operation , they will probably use it now as a bargaining tool for more pay now.
I think it should be DOO with a platform dispatcher at busy stations, ie James st, moorfields, lime st and central.

I fully agree, although my plan would be:

1) All trains DOO (ASLEF have already committed for to this as part of a recent pay deal on Merseyrail)
2) Small increase in revenue protection inspectors, (say 5 more)
3) Increase Penalty Fare to same as TfL, (£80 This is reduced to £40 if you pay within 21 days). This is expected to happen within the next year or two anyway.
4) Implement train dispatch staff on Underground stations, during busy periods or high risk periods, elsewhere add DOO equipment
5) Allocate Byelaw Enforcement Officers (Carlisle Security) to spend more time on trains, than at stations.

And you've just made savings of £7.5million a year, with possible revenue increase with Penalty Fares.
i rode 507015 on saturday.

how long does the air con program take to be fitten to units.

Around a days work per cab.

So 2 days for fitting and testing...

The saloons aren't AC controlled though, just the keyed in cab.
507001 and 507004 are the next two to have received the air conditioning modification.

Also noted 507012 in its favourite siding alongside Birkenhead North depot. Don't want to doubt the member who saw it on the Southport line at all, but it seems odd 012 has gone straight back to Birkenhead out of service.
I was the member who saw it and rode it on the southport line, it seems very odd i havent seen it since it was on the southport line the first time back in service which was a week and a half ago unless it developed a problem and had to return to birkenhead.

which kind of rail grinder visits the merseyrail network
Seems 012 has developed another fault 507 mad which is a shame.

I don't suppose anyone knows when the next Merseyrail unit is likely to be named?
