5O66, 5O67, 5O68 leave Kirkdale Depot at 11:30, 11:45, 12:00 respectively, head to Liverpool Central empty stock. They then work a couple of shuttles to Aintree, and return back to the depot at 14:03, 14:18 and 14:33.
Later, only 2 consists, 5G33 and 5G34 then go Kirkdale Depot to Aintree at 16:21 and 16:36, back into Kirkdale at 19:25 and 19:40.
So it appears as though 4 x additional 6-cars will be used in the morning to get people to the races, but only 2 x additional 6-cars will be used in the evening to get people back.
Could that be to run evening peak 6 cars on Wirral line and southport line for regular commuters?
There is only one scheduled evening peak 6 car on the Wirral Line that does the 17.10/18.25 Liverpool Central - West Kirby runs and it is usually caped when the Aintree Races are on. Last year I think two of the six Southport pairs were omitted on the Thursday and Friday and the 17.13 Central - Southport was also caped.
I'm pretty sure there will be three consists as usual - anyone who sees the enormous loads these trains generate at the end of the day will understand how necessary they are. Even on the Thursday and Friday, the three pairs will be essential to provide the 7/8 minute Aintree - Liverpool service.
Will do some digging. It is possible that something comes over from the Wirral in the afternoon and works to/from Aintree.
Unless there's a few unit failures?
Thanks. According to the information leaflet, the Aintree services are omitting Kirkdale, Walton and Orrell Park this year (for the first time ever I do believe). This could possibly allow them to use only two during the evening runs, but it still seems rather tight, especially if they are using three for the earlier trips.
Doubt there are too many failures as nothing has been short-formed on the Northern Line of late.
The Merseyrail website has been revamped and I must say it looks very nice. A massive improvement over the old layout which was dated and cumbersome. Best advice if you don't like yellow though is to stay away!
saw a road-railer hiding in the spare trackside land at hightown this afternoon. Anybody know what it will be doing overnight?

All three 6 cars are out in the afternoon, the one you missed is the 1606 from Kirkdale Depot which then works alongside the other two until the evening. There are also only three 6 cars working the extra Aintree trains in the morning, not four as you suggested HTH
Thanks for the clarification 507022, appreciated. All we need now is some warmer weather!
507002 out again on west Kirby line today. thats 7 days on the run on one line. I wonder if there is a reason for that?
Quick question for anyone who might know, is there a reason for the large scale vegetation clearance in the Hooton area, and up towards little sutton, in particular trees. Its been ongoing now for a few weeks at a slow ish pace
