But that is EXACTLY what was intended and promoted by the 1985 Act. The then Thatcher government advocated private competition to break up state monopolies (PTEs, LAs and NBCs) and encouraged bus wars throughout the UK apart from in London, of course. Don't you remember the chaos that followed?
What we have now is essentially a cartel of large private monopolies in 95% of the UK. The current government's ideology is even more in favour of free market competition and deregulation in all aspects of everyday life so to suggest that competition in provision of bus services ends is fanciful.

Did we have a separate thread for Bus Reform, mainly geared to GM? If so, should this be expanded to include LCR to compare the current Operating conditions and the Mayor's/LAs progress?
