Presumably the idea is that these sets can be put back in traffic when others run out of hours/mileage.
Plus there's still 150s and 156s running around without CIS or accessible toilets, something that won't be permitted from next month without an exemption order from DfT.

Half of 142005 has been collected by low loader and on it’s way to Booths, the other half will go tomorrow, this will be the first (in recent times) of the class to be scrapped.

This is apparently back out today.
Now in service are 331002 and 331013. Both were on Lime Street to Blackpool North services yesterday.
I am not sure if I have asked this before but if I have then I apologise for the a repeat question.
Will the 331s be able to run as 6, 7 and/or 8 coach fofmations on any of the routes.

They could but there are only plans for 6 car formations as far as I'm aware

Infrastructure constraints will prevent longer formations in places. For instance, at Salford Crescent there was a multi million pound upgrade a new of years back to allow 6 car 185s or equivalent. Anything longer (regardless of whether the train has SDO or unit deselect) can't be accommodated.
319373 will work 17:02 Man Vic - Liverpool tonight. Currently sat in Victoria reverse sidings so definitely not off lease anymore!
