I have taken plenty of bus photos in St. Helens (where I live) without problems. Any of the roads used by buses within 5 minutes walk from the bus station should be safe during daylight hours (though beware of a few moronic cyclists riding on the pavements.) The biggest problem is likely to be pedestrians or another vehicle passing between you and the bus you want to photograph.
If you want rides on Renowns, your best chance is probably between St. Helens & Earlestown on services 20, 34 or 34A, although they can also appear on other services. Earlestown Bus Station is also OK for photos, although the position of the sun can be tricky at certain times.

89 and 32/32A they can be on too, outside the town hall isn't a bad place with the camera as a large part is pedestrianised and it's a bus lane
Flickr always has a load behind the millennium centre as well with the church and transport museum in the background
Surprised that Pulsar 2698 was on the 35 today.
