I'm guessing it is, I don't know for definite.

Just watching BBC NW news reporting a proposal that Northern could acquire 1978 District Line stock to replace sprinters. Last time I looked the District Line was 3rd rail. Anyone got any idea how that might work?

Same thought occurred to me. I think they are going to replace the Pacers if it happens, though,

Maybe they stick a loco on one end and a DVT on the other end. That would be interesting!

Obviously they will be fitted with a diesel engine.

In other news, I have read in the latest RAIL magazine that the 6 156's going to TPE will now be transferred in May, not the Autumn as originally planned. This means that Northern's stock shortage could be made even worse if there are any further delays to the electrification programme.
The D78 stock is now owned by Viva Rail .
Adrian Shooter is one of the backers and don't we all know him from his time as MD of Chiltern Railways , one of the few success stories of railway franchising.
While Chiltern Railways is a success, I hope this idea isn't. Various issues such as a 60mph top speed and the crash worthiness of the vehicles.
The plan is to install two diesel engines in the motor cars to drive a generator to power the traction motors.
