Michael Portillo joins us for a Great British Tramway Journey!
Journalist and broadcaster (and former Member of Parliament), Michael Portillo joined us yesterday to film a sequence for his television series "Great British Railway Journeys". The popular series sees Michael travel the length and breadth of the country by train, with the aid of George Bradshaw's 1863 railway handbook, and yesterday it was the turn of the tramway to take a starring role!
Joining at Pleasure Beach during the afternoon, Michael and his film crew were taken for a journey along the tramway on Box 40 which was operating a special journey in service on heritage tours crewed by Bill Thompson and Andy Mitchell. During the journey, which fortunately took place in glorious sunshine following a wet and windy morning, Michael chatted to the passengers and obviously seemed to be enjoying his ride on the venerable old Box car!
The visit of "Great British Railway Journeys" to the Blackpool Tramway will provide excellent publicity for the town and the tramway in general, as well as allowing our Heritage Tram Tours some prime time television exposure!
