Southport Park & Ride
I took my first trip up to Southport in a few years this week to sample the Park & Ride buses and also see what other buses were around to see!
The current Southport Park & Ride service is operated by Arriva NW&W using two Alexander Dennis Enviro200Darts, 2143 CX08 DJO & 2144 CX08 DJU which are both painted in Southport Corporation style livery (although very nearly MTL livery!) with Park & Ride branding as seen below.
Originally when the Enviro200Darts were brought in a service was operated to Kew (in addition to the Esplanade Car Park) and thus 4 vehicles were supplied, however the other two, 2141 CX08 DJJ & 2142 CX08 DJK have since been repainted into standard Arriva livery, fitted with ticket machines and run normal services.
These four are currently the only Enviro200Darts in service with Arriva NW&W, however in late 2006/early 2007 an 8.9M demonstrator SN56 AWZ which was given fleetnumber 800 was also used at Chester depot.
Prior to the arrival of the Enviro200Darts, four VDL SB200/Wright Commanders were used from the time the Kew P&R (which too were painted in the red/cream livery, albeit for only about 12 months) however the main buses that operated the Esplanade P&R from 1998 to 2007 were the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered Dennis Dart SPD/Plaxton Pointer 2s S248/9/50/51 UVR. These operated the service in Smart Eco livery from new in 1998 for MTL and continued to do so with Arriva until around 2005 when they were converted to run on diesel and repainted into corporate livery and continued to run the service until 2007 – The four of them still operate at Southport depot today.
To compare them “before and after” first here is a photo of S250 UVR (then numbered 6250) in 2004 and still running on CNG and in Smart Eco livery followed by the same bus seen in June 2011 running on diesel and now numbered 2293.
This bus still has its relatively rare etched Plaxton logo on the drivers cab window along with the unusual side vent at the rear. From memory these buses had some sort of extra ventilation system, so I assume the air vents has to be side mounted as it on the roof, due to the gas system the flow of air would be very poor.
If seen from above the “scars” of where the roof top gas equipment has been removed can still be seen however they seem to work very well under with diesel engines and now have a much greater range. I do wonder however are the emission levels on the current Euro 4 Enviro200Darts on the P&R lower or higher than the SPDs were when new in 1998 running on CNG? I would be interested to hear if anyone does have any more information regarding this or the set up of the ventilation system on these.
Some other interesting buses seen in Southport included Stagecoach North West 28513 PO56 JDF Scania N94UB/ELC Esteem, one of only 4 ex Preston Bus vehicles that remain with Stagecoach NW and one of only two of these Scanias (the other two buses are Optare Solos – Some other ex Preston Bus Solos are in Manchester however!).
Also seen was Arriva NW&W 2110 S610 KHN Dennis Dart SLF 10.7M/Plaxton Pointer 2 which has only recently been transferred from Chester depot to Southport and still has its Chester depot allocation C sticker in its windscreen!
Finally at Southport Pier there is of course now a tram. The service runs every 30 mins and runs approximately 1 mile from one end of the pier to the other using one 2 coach tram.
This tram was built in the UK and started service on the pier in 2005 and is a battery powered electric tram, apparently with air-conditioning! I have struggled to find much more information about this tram, so as ever if you have any more information about it please get in touch!

Arriva Mercedes Artics on route 501
This week marked the start of Arriva NW&W using Mercedes Citaro O.530G articulated buses on route 501 (Liverpool South Parkway – Liverpool John Lennon Airport).
Two of these are now in overall dark blue and branded for route 501, those being 6005 BX04 MXB (ex Arriva London MA6) & 6014 BX04 MXM (ex Arriva London MA14). They have been converted to dual door (one door per section) rather than the original 3 doors and these two for the 501 have extra luggage racks. As yet I’m not sure of the exact capacity following conversion but I shall try to find out as soon as possible.
First here is an offside view of 6005 BX04 MXB.
Offside view of 6005 BX04 MXB showing the rear branding.
A nearside view of 6014 MX04 MXM.
The branding on the two do differ very slightly as (at least at the moment) 6005 doesn’t have the branding on the offside front section, where as 6014 has branding on both sides of both sections of the bus! Of the two VDL SB200/Wright Commanders 2601 CX06 BKF & 2602 CX06 BKG that previously operated the service, 2602 was noted on the 79 this week still in blue/cream livery but with all route 501 branding removed (though the Merseytravel logo was still at the rear offside) however I guess these will be repainted shortly!
At the other end of the scale (size wise) at Liverpool South Parkway I noted Stagecoach 47710 MX54 YZT an ex Arriva NW&W Optare Solo which has since had all its hybrid technology removed and is now fitted with a Cummins Biodiesel B30 fuel mix engine.
It certainly looks very smart and suits Stagecoach livery and it is good to see these buses now being used much more, as when they were fitted with their hybrid mechanics their reliability was poor. Cumfybus are apparently due a set of new Hybrid Optare Solos for routes C1-C5 soon but these will use a much better system than in these older Solos.
A new service to Liverpool South Parkway Railway Station recently is the service to Blackpool North operated by Northern Rail. This uses the same times as the original Liverpool Lime Street – Blackpool North service which had a long layover at Lime Street, so it now runs to Liverpool South Parkway and back. This is the first normal timetabled service to use platform 1 at Liverpool South Parkway too.
HTL Buses have recently received the last of its new Optare Solo M710SEs, and to confirm a total of 8 were delviered, 15 YJ11 EKG, 51 YJ11 EKH, 52 YJ11 EKK, 61 YJ11 EKL, 63 YJ11 EKM, 74 YJ11 EKN, 75 YJ11 EKO & 79 YJ11 EKP. Paul from HTL Buses have very kindly supplied a photograph of all 8 lined up for a photocall. I am very grateful to HTL for allowing the use of this photograph on the website, as well as them providing a fleetlist and fleet updates.
Due out of the fleet soon are Darts, 15 YN04 HHU, 51 W341 VGX, 52 W342 VGX, 61 V930 EWP, 64 V903 EWP, 74 P305 HDP, 75 P306 HDP & 79 W343 VGX.
Mercedes Sprinter 17 DK03 CWY, Renault Master 32 RX53 RYZ, Mercedes Vario 53 R250 XDA & Optare Alero 77 YP52 BRF are all long term VOR.
Noted yesteday in Liverpool City Centre was A1A Travel 32 P298 MLD one of very few step entrance Dennis Darts left in Liverpool. This is a relatively rare Euro2 step entrance Dart too, which were only built for a short time, roughly the time during the overlap of Dart and Dart SLF production in 1997/8.
For more of my photographs (and there are lots more new ones as well as many classic ones I am uploading) please see my Flickr Page!
HTL Solos and more Topless Tourist Buses
HTL Buses have received at least 3 new Optare Solo M710SEs during the last few weeks of May and I was able to get a photograph of one of them today!
Seen in practically the same spot as the white Solo HTL had on loan a few weeks back is YJ11 EKL. Others similar buses reported are YJ11 EKG, YJ11 EKH & YJ11 EKK.
As this week is half term, A1A Travel aren’t operating, so Stagecoach Merseyside run the 107/207 (City Centre – Mossley Hill/Penny Lane) as they every Saturday. Seen on it today was Dart SLF 33135 P813 YCW giving a significantly higher capacity (and quality some would say!) ride than the usual A1A Travel Mercedes-Benz Varios!
ACE Travel have recently renumbered ex MTL Metrobus F815 YLV to T5 in its tours fleet. Although it always has been used on City Sightseeing routes, it previously had number 258.
One of the other tours I haven’t yet featured on this blog is the Yellow Duckmarine, today I correct that omission, with a photo of YSJ 668 “Wacker Quacker II” emerging from Salthouse Dock.
Finally given the location I can do a bit of a before and after. Many readers will have seen my photograph of MTL 6401 K930 EWG Neoplan N4014 which I took in the summer of 1993. As I was there today I couldn’t resist taking another photo from the same viewpoint, 18 years later!
As you can see, very little has survived the 18 years (I think the bus shelter has been replaced at least twice since too!), the offices behind have all gone and Liverpool One is built, while even St Johns Beacon has been rebuilt with the extra floor for use by Radio City!

London Enviros, Geminis and a President
I visited London earlier this week and managed to ride and photograph some of the buses and trains on offer.
Amongst possibly the rarest ones to go on were the Hydrogen powered VDL SB200/Wright Pulsars operated by First London.
Although with these the chassis is officially VDL (at least as far as the DVLA are concerned) other than the chassis itself, the majority of it was built by others including Wrightbus. The Hydrogen tanks are on the roof of the bus and by using a hydrogen fuel cell they generate electricity which drives the bus. As a result the bus sounds just like an electric bus really with no obvious sounds from the fuel cell while the only emissions are water vapour.
As seen in this overhead view (the picture isn’t too clear as it was taken through a not so clean window at Tower Gateway DLR station) the tanks can be seen along with the ‘exhaust’ at the rear top. As hydrogen is in theory something we will never run out of (as it is part of water) then it is in theory a truly never ending supply of energy. If the costs do drop down over time hopefully more and more buses like this will be on the streets!
While we are due a number of Mercedes Benz Citaro G from Arriva London shortly on Merseyside (for Speke depot) and also for Runcorn depot, many are still in use in the capital where I managed to get my first ride on one.
Although there have been problems with these in some routes in London, on the 73 at least they didn’t appear to have any problems and were well used. Much like the majority of buses and trains in London, they all seemed to run at least every 5 minutes and in most cases be very well used! Ironicly despite this being the first time I’d even seen a London Citaro G, I saw Arriva NW&W 6006 BX04 MXC (the former MA6) on test today in Hunts Cross in Arriva Interurban livery.
London Euston’s bus station provides a lot of interest too with many bus types and operators providing services, as well as the Citaros, in the few minutes I spent at the bus station I saw Scania N230UD/Scania OmniCities, ADL Enviro400s, Volvo B7TL/Wright Eclipse Geminis Volvo B7TL/Plaxton Presidents.
For anyone who does travel to London I can recommend buying an TfL TravelCard, even if you aren’t in London all that long, a Zone 1-2 ticket (bought after 09.30) costs £6.60 (at current prices) which covers most of Central London for travel on almost all trains, buses, tubes and DLR.
To break up all the red vehicles, at Waterloo Station is a class 444 Desiro looking very good in the pleasant weather!
To see the rest of my photos from the day including many more train ones, please see my at Flickr Page
Finally, the title says I saw a President, more so THE President of the United States of America – By absolute fluke (given I booked the tickets 12 weeks ago) I saw President Obama’s cavalcade of cars go past (assumedly with him inside) as he had come to London 1 day earlier than planned due to the ash cloud!
Supertravel Streetlites arrive!
After much anticipation, Supertravel’s Wright Streetlites have finally hit the roads of Merseyside!
MX11 CZP, MX11 CZR & MX11 EGE are all reported in use on various Supertravel routes in Liverpool and on the Wirral. Only MX11 EGE has been noted with a fleetnumber so far, it is 021, which I noted today when I saw on the 155 in Birkenhead Bus Station.
These are repotedly the 8.8M model, seating 33. They have a small Voith gearbox and a 4 cylinder Cummins ISBe engine. As yet none are reported to have Supertravel branding, however I am sure this will be applied shortly.
Noted earlier this week also in Birkenhead were a selection of Avon Buses vehicles. This operator has a varied modern fleet, largely comprising of Dart SLFs, however with many variants on length and bodies!
One of the latest acquisitions to the fleet is 129 R129 RLY, a Dennis Dart SLF 10.1M/Plaxton Pointer which along with 139 R139 RLY is ex ex Central Connect, Birmingham.
Avon have also acquired three other Darts recently, 254 R154 VLA, which is the same length and from the same former operator, however is has Plaxton Pointer 2 bodywork. The other two acquisitions are both Dart MPDs from A1A Travel, 124 W11 JBA (this will be re-registered by Avon before it is used) and 152 SG52 VFP.
Finally a rarer bus seen in Liverpool on Monday was Stagecoach North West 8374 MX55 KRD Alexander Dennis Trident 2/Alexander Dennis ALX400 on the X2. Although ALX400s are relatively common on the X2 these days, the newer ex Stagecoach Manchester examples are rarer. One example I’ve never seen, however I believe it has happened, is an S reg ex Stagecoach London ALX400 on the X2!

Park (your horse) and Ride
The latest in integrated transport is now available on the streets of Liverpool, noted today in Wavertree, the worlds first park (your horse) and ride bus stop!
Back to reality, the steps shown to the right of the bus stop were apparently constructed such that years ago people riding their horses could mount or dismount them far easier than having to jump to or from the ground. They are seen outside Holy Trinity Church Hall, on Church Road, Wavertree, Liverpool.
I seriously doubt anyone has used them for the intended purpose for years (you’d probably get in trouble for riding a horse on the footpath!) but the recent repaving and high kerb added at the bus stop almost make it integrated transport!
Another relic seen at a bus stop also in Wavertree today is on Thingwall Road, where a very old bus stop sign remains.
Seen still showing the old 051 (rather than 0151 number) which dates it at least pre 1995, this one (unlike the similar photo on my Flickr page) even has the old Zone Ticket markings, rather than the yellow Area markings shown on more modern bus stops – Many like this had the older markings covered with a sticker to show the new ones, but I don’t recall this stop ever being altered. Is there an older bus stop anywhere else in Merseyside?
Back to normal buses, noted yesterday in Liverpool City Centre was Stagecoach ADL Enviro300 27717 PO11 BCV showing new route 10A branding, the first example of which I have seen or heard reported.
This branding seems nice and clean (like the similar 14 and 20/21 branding on the MAN/Enviro300s) unlike some other areas were the windows are covered in contravision as part of the branding. I believe a number of the ADL Enviro300s will also get 14 branding, while some of the MAN/Enviro300s will also gain 10A branding.
A relatively rare bus also noted yesterday in Liverpool was YourTravel DK56 SEO, a BMC 1100FE schoolbus on William Brown Street.
Not the nicest looking of buses but these certainly provide a better image to many children I guess than school buses of days gone by which may to enthusiasts be much more interesting, but don’t give as good an impression to children or their parents!
New Buses Update May 2011
As 11 reg has now been around for a few months now I will try to compile a quick list of all newly delivered buses to operators in Merseyside and the surrounding areas. I will also later compile a list of acquired vehicles which will be in a separate post in a few days. Hopefully I will be able to make a similar posts every month! Thanks as ever to all those on who post on the website who’s information is used to compile these lists!
The following buses have all been delivered (or due to be delivered) after 1st March 2011.

May (the third) be with you!
Oh well I was only one day out with my title!
Another sunny day out today in Liverpool so plenty of opportunities to get more photographs.
Noted today rather unusually on Brownlow Hill in Liverpool was Stagecoach Fife 53208 SV54 BYZ Volvo B7R/Plaxton Elite in megabus.com livery, out of service. Sadly I wasn’t able to get a photograph of this one as I was on another bus at the time.
HTL Buses have Optare Solo SE M710 (the smallest Solo available) YJ60 KFP on loan at the moment, which I saw on route 101 (Walton Circular). This bus was also previously with Peoplesbus and A2B Travel I believe.
On cross river duties, Arriva 4002 Y48 ABA was seen, sporting its revised livery, following collision damage repairs.
There is some debate whether or not this looks better than the normal Arriva livery – I quite like it myself (I like the similar black area below windscreens on ALX400s), but either way it makes 4002 easier to identify from the other two Plaxton Presidents!
Also noted unusually on cross rivers was First Manchester (it still seems odd referring to Rock Ferry depot as First Manchester!) Dennis Dart SLF 10.7M/Plaxton Pointer 2 40670 S341 EWU. This bus has a large luggage rack over the front nearside wheelarch, but quite unusually also has a rack at the very back nearside, and so is B33F rather than the usual B37F for a Dart this size. I’m not sure why it has the extra racks, was it ever an airport bus somewhere?
Amongst the buses on the X2 today was TransBus Trident 2/TransBus ALX400 18159 PX54 AWW. These are becoming increasingly common on the X2 now as since the route was split into two, the PVR has increased by 1 I believe and there is no need the vehicles to be tachograph fitted. Thankfully almost all workings are still doubel deck operated!
Stagecoach Merseyside had Dennis Dart SLF 10.7M/Alexander ALX200 33482 R462 SEF out on route 19 today. According to last months Stagecoach Merseyside fleetcard this bus was stored so it must have been reinstated recently.
Finally Arriva had two unusual workings that I noted today, 3344 R234 AEY Volvo Olympian/Northern Counties Palatine was out on route 56, while on route 10 1054 R54 XVM Scania L113/Northern Counties Paladin II was seen in service.
To see any other photos I took today or in the past please view my Flickr page!
Topless in Liverpool…..and other other bus photos!
Another unseasonally warm day was had in Liverpool again today so I have been out getting some photographs!
The open top tour buses in Liverpool continue to do well, even on weekdays during the good weather and at least three were out in force today.
ACE Travel had Volvo Olympian/ELC Pyoneers T01 S848 DGX and T02 S855 DGX out on their City Sightseeing tour, while Maghull Coaches had Scania N113/Northern Counties K866 LMK on their tour. S855 DGX was rare in Liverpool until recently as it was used on the Southport tour last year so has since been rebranded. It differs from the other two ACE Travel Olympians as it is fully open top, the other two are partial open toppers.
Also noted today was Stagecoach North West 15472 PX09 AXB Scania N230UD/Alexander Dennis Enviro400 showing its revised 2X2 branding, to cover the X2 (Liverpool – Southport) and 2X (Southport – Preston) routes, as they are now split from having once been just the one route.
A recent addition to Arriva NW&W at Laird Street is 4097 S277 JUA DAF DB250RS/Alexander ALX400. A number of these along with some ex London Volvo B7TL/Wright Eclipse Gemini which are due soon are sadly likely to see off all the remaining ex MTL Volvo Olympians at the depot.
Another route which is likely to get ex London buses, albeit ones older than the current fleet is route 501 (Liverpool South Parkway – Liverpool John Lennon Airport) which is expected to be operated with ex London Mercedes Citaro G articulated buses shortly, along with route 500.
Today both of the buses on the route were the normal VDL SB200/Wright Commanders in 501 livery, 2601 & 2602.
Finally also noted at Liverpool South Parkway was one time CMT Buses N656 CHF, now 32923 in the Stagecoach fleet and used as a driver shuttle bus.
For more of my photos, see my Flickr page!
Avon Buses newly acquired Darts
Avon Buses have now acquired two ex A1A Travel Dart MPDs, SG52 VFP and W11 JBA.
Neither has entered service yet, but both are in fleet livery, as seen here on 152 SG52 VFP.
Three more other second hand Dart SLFs are also due shortly from other operators, full details of which are not known at present. The fleetnumber for W11 JBA is as yet unconfirmed.
Thanks to Don Roberts for the information and photograph.
