If it was going to stop anywhere else it should be Newton-le-Willows, people from Chester/North Wales could change just once at a nice easy station like NLW, same platform interchange rather than having to navigate their way around Manchester. As it is, the TPE service runs 2½ minutes in front of the ATW service meaning that such a connection can't be made.

So if the service from Liverpool service is late , it will have to run behind the ATW service .

Is that a problem? The ATW service is non stop between MCO and NLW.

Linespeed is partly 90mph up there too, with ATW services being timed at 75mph over that section, so if ATW is late, it can make time up there anyway. Usually ends up being 2-4 minutes early into Newton-le-Willows on the way back to Chester as a result, and similarly, can arrive into Manchester Oxford Road a few minutes early too.

(Example, http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y9.../advanced)
Arrived into Newton-le-Willows at 15:09¼, not booked to leave until 1512½. Therefore it can make 3 minutes up easy.

Travel is glamorous only in retrospect.

On the news tonight the leasing company are taking 9 class 170s off TPE later this year to lease to Chiltern. At this time, it isn't known what is going to replace them

Mentioned this morning on the BBC that rolling stock from Northern may be moved over to replace them.

RE: First Transpennine Express
Surely there aren't sufficient spare DMUs for Northern to replace this shortfall, without capacity reductions?

No, I wouldn't have thought so. Meetings today and for the rest of the week to try and secure units to fill the gap left by Chiltern taking the units, apparently.

Another example of poor planning, and a lack of investment in previous years to prevent this thing from happening. Overcrowding on trains hardly encourages people to give up the car. Until all the electric overhead lines are installed we still need DMU's..

Oh dear! Not a good outcome for rail passengers in the north generally. It's difficult to see where any potential replacement DMUs could come from. Capacity reductions would be a disaster.
