Normal single deckers have used that route not all that long ago on the likes of the 159 so not quite mini buses, if he restriction on deckers was put on it must have been very late 80's at the very least.

Had a look on Google Earth street view & the maximum weight allowed is over the bridge 7.5 tonnes, was mid late 80s that restriction being imposed.

Probably toward late 80's then as remember one of the 17's that used to run Liverpool - Bootle Strand going that way after de-reg.

It was the 19 that merged with the 72 becoming Tower Hill-Hunts Cross, 4 & 5 stayed Woolton-City Centre, think the 4 & 5 was withdrawn around this time not merged with any route i've got a leaflet detailing the changes somewhere.

The Kirkby-Bootle route via Waddicar was the 54 operated by North Western, because of the weight restriction on Aintree Lane over the Canal North Western could only use minibuses, North Western extended the route at both ends to become Page Moss-City Centre, then extended the route again from City Centre to Page Moss to become a circle route 54,54A taking over 2 hours for 1 circuit, even then North Western still used minibuses as it still went down weight restricted Aintree Lane.

Think 218 stayed Kirkby-City Centre.

61A was a circle route with 61 ar D-Reg some journeys were numbered 62 Aigburth-Leckwith Road Industrial Estate, eventually 61/61A was split at Bootle, i've got an October 1986 Liverpool area bus map[have a few maps from that era including 1988 & 1990 Liverpool area maps.

These maps are great!! Would be interesting to find out which route numbers stuck after d-day and whether they just changed over time because the new 'private' companies deemed so

Mention of the extended 79 in Post 9 reminds me of the stability of the route prior to D-Day. The only changes that I can remember were by LCPT for the extensions to Lee Park and Netherley and in the City Centre for the closure of Church Street, William Brown Street and Elizabeth Street. After D-Day and the closure of Prince Alfred Road depot the route was run from four different depots (Garston, Gillmoss, Edge Lane and Speke with at least twice at Garston) before finally settling at Speke. Its time at Gillmoss was easily the most exiting with the different types of bus used. It hosted the first trials of the Titan in the city prior to Merseybus purchasing a vast amount of the type. It was not uncommon to see nearly all red buses in service at one point as the Titans were joined at Gillmoss by five ex LT Metrobus (0015-0019). Also you could see Metrobus 0801-20. The splitting of the route back to the 14 and 79 saw the route return to Garston until its closure and re-allocation to Speke.
Nowadays the route has returned to double deck after many years of single deck operation. It can still be interesting as although the Geminis are the dominant bus it see any of the Speke allocation on a daily basis from the 64/15 Enviro400s, B7 Alexander, ex LT Geminis to the occasional single deck Commanders.

All time rail mileage travelled 327264 miles

Talking of Merseybus cross city of 91 I remember the following:

3+5 (3) as above
11 + 56 (11) Netherton - Huyton
14 + 79 (79) Croxteth - Netherley
18 + 53A (18) Netherton (then Crosby) - Croxteth Park
19 + 72 (19) Tower Hill - Halewood
20/21 + 82 (20/21) Tower Hill/Northwood - Speke
25 Diverted and extended to Maghull if I remember!
55 Old Roan - Garston
58 + 81A (81A) Litherland - Speke
75 + 91 (91) Crosby - Huyton
80 + 321/322 (80/80A/80B) Ormskirk - Garston/Airport
86 + 93 (86) Thornton - Garston (links with 55)

Im sure it was the 53 that was merged with the 86
86+53 & 55.
Think it was 93+18, MTL kept number 18 for Crosby-City Centre until after the Arriva brought MTL & changed most routes around 2000-2001 when it became 50, when the 18 split, City-Croxteth Park section became 18A until Arriva dropped the A.

No as MrT stated it was defo 93+86

the 18 was simply withdrawn in 2000 with no replacement.

the 90 became 50, 91 became 51 and 137 became 57

I got mistaken on the 53, 93, 18, easy enough to do after all these years.

The 3 Dingle-Walton never got merged with the 5, that got merged with the 85, the Merseybus era 3 Fazakerley or was it Black Bull-City Centre may been the one that was merged with the 5.

The 3 was City Centre-Fazakerley at the time in competition with Fareways F3.
Then got extended via Netherton to Old Roan with the 5 so ran Woolton - City Centre - Broadway - Black Bull - Old Roan
