Merseyrail
RE: Merseyrail
In 2006, they required 7 six car sets (14 units) to operate the Hoylake service. This would mean 55 units in service assuming six cars on the Southport and Chester routes. They use 54 units on events such as Grand National Saturday, so the clear majority of the Southport services should be six car on the Saturday and all on the Sunday.

The nationals only a 3 day event though. Considering the units are about to be flogged to death for a week of the open followed by four days of the giants your Southport 6 car dream will stay just that!

I wonder how many of the units will by the end of the week will of The Open will be needing some sort of attention from the staff of Birkenhead North .

The problem comes when the spare units for The Open are used up and then they have to look at units that are still running on the Network . I suppose when put in that position the New Brighton and Kirkby service will become a casualty to provide units , lets just hope that is not an eventuality that is needed .

This is time when Merseyrail really could have done with what was the entire fleet of 507/8 that are still alive , but in the years gone by Arriva decided we did not need them and stored them and then have subsequently been used in other parts of the country before eventual re use or scrapping.

RE: Merseyrail
Well, we'll see how many six cars they put out. Using a full complement of three cars on the Southport line on the Open weekend would be disgraceful, plain and simple. A golf championship does not equal no one travelling on other lines, and they did put out at least half an allocation of pairs on the line during 2006. The Open is four days, not a week.

Arriva had nothing to do with the decision to store the 508s. Units were first stored in 1991 under British Rail and it continued throughout the 1990s. The final withdrawals, taking the fleet down to just 53, were made around the time the franchise was handed over to MTL. Arriva only came on the scene in 2000, and to their credit, were part of the refurbishment programme which allowed six 508s to be reinstated.

They have had plenty of opportunities to take back the 508/2s and 508/3s but it didn't happen due to various disagreements. Needless to say, the passengers came off worst and the overcrowding continues.

The Opens from Sunday to Sunday, Sunday to Wednesday for the practice sessions which still pull in sizeable crowds. Additional services run Thursday to Sunday when it's busiest but 6 cars will run from Sunday onwards for the practice sessions.

The joys of a privatised railway mean profit will always come first. If you think it's bad now you're in for a he'll of a shock when the new units eventually come, there'll be less of them not more.

I'll definitely believe that one when I see it.

RE: Merseyrail
If there is less units there really is no room for expansion of the system and any extensions to the network you could say bye to in the near future .

The thought seems to be that newer units will need less maintenance meaning Merseyrail can get by with less units.
Crazy idea to me,this is where Merseytravel need to step in now and make sure this doesn't happen...

You've still not said how many people were left behind though.

Also probably any maintainence on the trains will be taken on by the manufacturers of the trains as well , meaning those staff will then be leaving Merseyrail as well.
