RE: Arriva's 2013-15 Orders
Hot off the press from Route One mag's live news service:

Arriva places £40m orders to upgrade bus fleet

Arriva UK Bus has placed £40m of orders for 236 buses to upgrade its core fleet during 2014.
The bulk of orders are with Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and Wrightbus. All will have free Wi-Fi and 104 buses will form part of Arriva’s premium ‘Sapphire’ fleet.

Significantly, the ADL Enviro200s have a “revolutionary new automated manual transmission” reducing fuel consumption and emissions by around 13%, ensuring a performance on par with hybrids. The system has Low Carbon Emission Bus Certification, qualifying for extra BSOG.

The order is for: 94 ADL Enviro400 double-deckers; 40 ADL Enviro200 midi buses; 70 Wrightbus StreetLite Micro Hybrid single deckers; 27 StreetLite Micro Hybrid midi buses and five Optare Versas for Yorkshire Tiger.

Full story in this week’s routeONE, published tomorrow (Wednesday)

RE: Arriva's 2013-15 Orders
It occurs to me that the Pulsars delivered to Green Lane and Bangor may be the last ones delivered for Arriva. They seem to have switched their preferred type of full-size single-decker to StreetLite, just as First have from their previous standard type of Eclipse.

That's because the SB200 is no longer available in the UK at Euro6.

A "revolutionary new automated manual transmission" sounds interesting. Although sadly I doubt it will mean a return of proper semi-autos of old!

Ah well, I'm looking forward to the arrival of the Enviro400's at Southport for the Wigan route.

RE: Arriva's 2013-15 Orders
Their spiel of a 'revolutionary new automated manual transmission' is laying it on a bit thick I feel. These things have been around for ages in coaches, trucks and 7.5tonners, unless they've managed to sneak something in under the radar that the HGV market has missed out on. Wrights announced last year that they'd also be using them at Euro 6 and Volvo has used the concept in its hybrids for a while.

Whether they will work well in urban, non-hybrid bus service remains to be seen, but I can understand where the fuel savings are coming from. Presumably they must outweigh the cost of a new clutch every now and then.

This explains it, although it will be a big departure for Arriva not to order any DAF/ VDL products anymore. This incidentally means that the Sapphire Pulsars built new for route 7 in Co Durham were probably unique, although others at Bolton are being refurbished to Sapphire, with others doubtlessly to follow.

Revised order details from Arriva North East (will post more details in the relevant thread):

Enviro400s
7522-8 (NK14 GFJ/O/U/V/X/DE/F) - Sapphire Enviro400s for Ashington, 7522/3 delivered today
7529-33 - 'MAX' Enviro400s for Ashington (X18)

Wright Streetlite
1550-1559 - Stockton 5/5A (Sapphire)
1560-1573 - Redcar X3/X4 (Sapphire)
1574-1578 - Durham 23
1579-1581 - Ashington 35
1582-1589 - Jesmond 306 (Green hybrid livery)
1590-1594 - Darlington X1 (believed to be MAX spec)

Volvo B9TLs
6 Wright Eclipse Gemini 2-bodied examples have been purchased from Volvo Dealer Stock for service X93 (Middlesbrough-Whitby-Scarborough) to replace the ex-London B7TLs on full time operation.

Can people note that the 'MAX' branding scheme is a North East and Yorkshire regional scheme.

What exactly is MAX? A lower grade version of Sapphire?

More or less, it's for express and interurban-style routes. The only difference is that MAX doesn't have plug sockets nor next stop announcement. Yorkshire's 268 is the first to be launched followed by North East's X10/X11.
