Are there any exemptions allowed e.g. if a 55 reg bus fails surely putting an older bus on is better than not running services?

I'm not sure tbh I just know that both first and several independents have been criticised in the past for using buses older than the age limit and in the case of the independant, using vehicles with dateless private plates on to disguise the fact lol.

The quote i quoted said they were in everyday use. Even if they were spare, they should be above the age requirement on tenders

I suppose if they usually carry cherished plates it wouldn't be immediately obvious (especially as goodwins have so many similar plates). I live near several of their routes and haven't noticed any over age buses using conventional plates.

Makes no difference. They sign a contract and agree to the terms of the contract, part of which is vehicles are to be low floor and under 15 years of age.
As I've mentioned already an independant sadly no longer around used to be heavily criticised for using elderly vehicles with cherished plates on on school services, plus it's not exactly fair on operators who stringlently make sure all their fleet are well below the 15 year age mark.

It's not so bad of they are used occasionally when nothing else is available but if there our every day it's really not good enough.
