I came across this system in Sydney, Australia that has a graduated fare structure, two years ago. Initially, it took me a while to remember to tap out. Failure to do so resulted in being charged for the full length of the route even if I only travelled a few stops. Needless to say, I got the hang of it fairly quickly.
