I came across this system in Sydney, Australia that has a graduated fare structure, two years ago. Initially, it took me a while to remember to tap out. Failure to do so resulted in being charged for the full length of the route even if I only travelled a few stops. Needless to say, I got the hang of it fairly quickly.
Seems similar to the TFL oyster card in London were you have to tap in & tap out on every journey you make.

Very similar except in London, you don't have to tap in and off on the bus because it's a flat fare whereas the Ticketer Tap In Tap Off you need to tap off because the bus fares vary.
If someone had a flat fare though on services I think it would be the exact same as Oyster, no tapping out since irrespective of tapping out, the same fare would be charged.

The fare structure in the Liverpool area is flat fare. £2.30 Arriva & £2.20 Stagecoach.

Can you imagine the havoc and slow entry and exit if you had to tap off a bus , easier on the tube because you have all the time in the world , the bus companies or soon to be the case of TfGM and Merseytravel would soon see it as detrimental to a service running on time without some extra running time .

It would be quite an easy system for Stagecoach and Arriva to introduce in Liverpool and Wirral if they wanted to (easy in comparison to other operators). Cross river and cross border journeys excepted since they cost more.

That is why the 'tap off' device is placed on a hand rail near the front, normally on the left, facing the back of the bus so you always see it when you get off. The idea being just tap quickly as you walk past. You don't need to go to the ticket machine.

Could it be argued that you save time at the boarding stop since you won't be asking for a ticket etc, you just tap on so overall it evens itself out?
Well Stagecoach would have to get ERG to make a system. I was chatting to a driver from Oxford last week about the system and was told the system has issues. As you have to let the driver turn off the reader before putting a card on the reader for any other item like a day return or child fare or they get charged the full fare. as it would charge them and they would have to tap out or get voided.

The system is fast as driver don`t have to type into ETM.
So boarding is like everyone has a pass. And getting off people just need to touch out if they don't they would get charged the max fare for that trip. Same as metrolink it does not take long to touch out so long as people are ready with the card.

Thats the operative word ready with the card , how many times have you got on a bus and the person is still rooting around in there purse for there smartcard . I just cant see a tap off system working one of the reasons the system was never really introduced in London , the tube is different because there is a natural obstacle , the ticket barriers.
