Yep it stems from the 1959 when all Crosville routes were renumbered with prefix letter

Fxx Wirral-Ellesmere Port & Neston, although Fxx wholly in the Merseyside area later became 72 to 89

Nxx Bangor & Anglesey [no not night buses]

Sxx Aberystwyth

The 500 does get busy enough at times to warrant the use of double deckers. I've seen very well loaded double deckers on the route fairly recently - so it's a good move to replace the 40-seat Commanders with double deckers in my opinion
