Well looking at the problem solely from a business prospective no requirement for a guard on board reduces the chance of cancellations and delays. However, my understanding is the Northern DCO plan is for the new trains to be operated by a driver and an assistant with the driver doing all the operational work and the assistant focusing on revenue and customer service (including assisting disabled passengers), opposed to the plan being to run services with just a driver on board.
