Can depend on other factors entirely, such as chassis rot, gearbox problems, maybe even non-visual bodywork corrosion or something. Buses don't get taken off the road simply because they have something wrong in the engine/gearbox area of things - take Dennis Arrow S454SLL at First Manchester - Chassis rot led to it being taken off the road this year, yet mechanically in the back it performed like a dream!
