The 86 is basically a filler for the 554 between runs, so instead of going straight back to Carlisle it will do a 20-minute round tip to Portinscale and back

This would actually be 18365. This is normally at Penrith for service 104 but has been on the 554 for a couple of days and 16650 has been at Penrith.

The branded bus for the 554 - 18357 - has been off for over a week and is dumped at the side of Carlisle depot and seems to have suffered a major unit failure. 16650 is the spare double-decker at Carlisle but 16119 is also at the side of the depot newly painted and looks to be available for service.

My apologies for the typo. It was indeed 18365 not 17365.
Thanks for your responses.

18357, the green-liveried Trident branded for the 554 (Carlisle-Keswick) has still not reappeared in service and 16119, one of the Olympians recently transferred from Fort William, was on the 554 today.

Cumbria Councty Council have a public consultation underway on proposed future budget cuts.

One cut is to cease funding completely subsidies to bus services - £1.343m to bus operators. The full list of services subsidised is at http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/eLibrary/Conte...165249.pdf which shows service number, route, district (i.e local council), operator, days, cost of subsidy, no of passengers, cost per passenger. Some abreviations used are SCC=Stagecoach, A=Allerdale Council, B=Barrow Council, C=Cop=Copeland Council, Car=Carlisle Council.

Stagecoach appears more often than all the other operators listed put together.

Thanks, I wondered where it had gone. Carlisle's other two Tridents (usually at Penrith) were also out of service yesterday so the Olympians were hard at work: 16118 on 104; 16119 on 554; 16650 on 104 and 16776 on 524 schools.

34694 is currently on the Lillyhall outstation working, instead of 20965 which strangely was on the 67/68 for most of the day.

20944 has been at Carlisle all week and was on Caldew School yesterday but I do not know what is replacing this on the 108 at Penrith. 20711 has appeared at Carlisle and was on the Wigton schools. I also saw 20712 in Carlisle but do not know if it was used in service. All in all a lot of Volvos running round Carlisle at the moment!

So does this mean there is a chance an oly will be on the 554 right up until Christmas until the trident returns?

As there are only three Tridents for three double-deck workings, an Olympian is always needed if one of them is off. 18361 and 18365 are usually outstationed at Penrith for the 104 and so an Oly has been on the 554 for most of the last six weeks since 18357 went off. However, 18365 which has been in for maintenance is on the 554 today but I expect it to be back at Penrith next week.

If you are in Carlisle during the week, the three deckers leave at 1132 (104), 1200 (554) and 1232 (104) so if 18357 is still away, you can expect an Olympian on at least one of these - on Thursday it was all three!

Thanks that is very helpful. I hope to be in Carlisle Friday and Saturday next wwek but nothing finalized with work yet. I am not too concerned about the 104 as recently had 16336 and 16650 on it. It is the 554 I want to have an oly on.

My main concern is if the missing trident returns from Newcastle by next Friday as I will clearly be wasting leave if the 554 is back to the booked bus. Its the Clint Eastwood do I feel lucky syndrome...
