Back in 1991 I remember boarding a class 508 unit from rock ferry to liverpool which arrived as a 4 coach, unfortunately I cannot remember which unit it was but although merseyrail staff will deny they have run a 4 coach unit and it is a huge pity that camera phones were not around back then otherwise I would have filmed to prove that it has happened before.

Yeah I do remember hearing about that, however it was riddled with reliability and power issues
More than anything it would just be a waste of time. It couldn't run in multiple with anything else, everyone would have to be trained on it, stabling would be a nightmare (ie it couldn't stable on a platform with another 3 car) and diagramming it would be a nightmare.

a 4 car train would struggle up from the river bed as the 4th coach would be a trailer coach unpowered.

All the stored units at Warrington are being moved to the Traincare depot that you mention, presumably it’s a safer location. 777014 has almost completed its fault free running, 008 will start after that.
777006 will be commissioned next week

That’s correct, a test was carried out many years ago up from the river bed. It was not able to keep to the running times and it was never continued

RE: Merseyrail
According to a post on RailUK Forums, the damaged car of 507 006 was spotted on the M57 around 16.15, thus suggesting it's heading to Newport by road

RE: Merseyrail
I have just watched the video, great footage there despite the low light.

It looks like the tarpaulin was removed from the damged driving coach

That’s odd, if it was going by road I would have thought it would’ve happened from Kirkdale. The only reason I can think of is road access at the depot. But I seem to remember when 507002 got taken away for repairs some years ago, the three coaches all came by road

RE: Merseyrail
The derailment of 507002 at kirkdale wasn't the only repair I read about once.

There was an incident with the unit when 1 of the 4 traction motors became detached from the bogie and flung upwards into the floor apparently it was still turning when the incident occured.
