If take into account the amount of services on the line Stanlow and Thornton is the least used station per train , when they ran (during the last period of the usuage figures there was a Northern Dispute - Which disrupted operations).

The idea was there would be a commuter service from Ellesmere Port to Manchester but the problem with that is there's no services except at peak times meaning if someone is on a half day, doesn't work normal office hours, needs to go home sick, works late, stays behind for drinks with colleagues etc. then they have to go to go via Hooton with 2 changes of train. Hardly an attractive option!
