The idea was that the new Northern branding would remain in place for the next franchise following DfT & rail North putting a clause in the franchise agreement. This was the result of the mess created when Abellio & Serco tried to sell Arriva the old Northern logo (which they had registered as a trade mark), only for Arriva to tell them to get lost as they felt the old logo and livery represented low quality, which then meant Abellio & Serco had to pay to cover up/remove all their IP from stations and trains.
