I was under the impression the 500/501 has/had some form of funding behind it by merseytravel or the Airport itself (not sure about the 500 anymore as its spekes secret goldmine!)

The 501 is funded by Merseytravel as a direct link to the airport, the purpose of it is to replace the proposed station at the Airport after plans were axeo fir merseytram and the direct rail link. The 501 is therefore the only service that gives LSP its "Airport link" status and thus is not a candidate to be withdrawn.
