This one made a rare appearance on the CityLink circular today. Whilst I agree that it looks rubbish externally, it's not bad inside, and I hadn't previously been aware that it even has seatbelts. (Does it also have a different engine than most Solos? It sounded a bit deeper and more powerful.)

On a separate note, VU02 TTY is yet another Alero to have SORN declared. (Perhaps Cumfybus are supporting the No More Page Three campaign? Smile )

haven't had the pleasure of a ride in it, but the outside is the first thing you see isn't it.

I'm pretty certain (EH06 UNY) has the usual Mercedes OM900-series engine pushing it along. This engine (the 4.2 litre OM904LA 4-cylinder to be exact) is also used in the Vario van and Atego truck range. Easily identified by its distinctive 'clattery-purr' engine note.

As you probably know, three large M950 Solos use the Cummins ISBe 5.9 litre 6-cylinder engine, these being (MX04 VLU), (MX06 YXV) and (MX06 YYA). I'm reliably informed these are well-liked within the depot, due to being extremely powerful and fast.

Two M880SL Solos also use the 5.9 litre Dart engine (but in Euro4 configuration), these being (MX57 CDO) and (MX57 CDU). With their lighter weight, narrower SlimLine body and shorter (8.8 meter) size, they're EVEN FASTER than the M950s!
Hardly surprising then that 'CDU' is declared SORN at the moment.
Too fast for its own good perhaps?...
Wink

RE: Cumfybus
I wouldn't mind a drive of a Cummins engine Solo one day just to see the difference actually but from riding them they do seem more powerful - That said, the Mercedes OM904 engine is still very good, fuel efficient and from experience can still pull away at a good rate and get to around 60mph on the motorway without struggling!

Slightly off topic, but Stagecoach (somewhere!) have some even rarer Solos now with Cummins engines and Voith gearboxes!

RE: Cumfybus
That's right, all seven are allocated to Aberhill depot, for routes X4, 13, 32, G7. And they even have voith gearboxes. So, instead of a solo in good voice, we have one in good voith!

RE: Cumfybus
That is something I thought I'd never hear , a voith solo! Saying that I'm sure an Alero either owned by Cumfy or HTL had a ZF Ecolife gearbox fitted? xD

Been hating Urban 90's since 2001Dodgy

RE: Cumfybus
EH06 UNY and MX06 ABN were both delivered with the standard Mercedes Benz/Allison driveline and have never been fitted with Cummins engines- you maybe confused with the slightly later pair MX06 YXV and YYA.

Also ABK (UNY) and ABN were specified with all of seating (tip ups excepted) on the low floor area totally demountable, being fitted to tracking (as the Aleros) so they are capable of carrying several wheelchairs.

RE: Cumfybus
Thanks for all the responses. Evidently I've just been getting too used to the hybrids, and have forgotten what a "normal" Solo sounds like! Smile
