As the cogs have to be brought together, they have to be spinning at roughly the same speed in order to mesh (otherwise you get a crunch and no gear) - this means engine speed has to match road speed for that gear, ie. a rev drop when changing up.

Compare that to a syncromesh gearbox on all modern vehicles where the cogs are constantly engaged and you just change the locking of them onto the driveshaft; no worries about matching speeds within the 'box.

Indeed that is correct...I've driven all manner of boxes (albeit most for very short periods of time and maybe none to successfully at first ;-)!!) so know where you're coming from - as well as having to treat some synchros as though they were crash. But pausing in between gear changes on semis is also essential. And the pause required is slightly different from bus to bus to achieve the smoothest change - up or down (with a rev on the downchange to match engine and road speed). 1836 is very much different from the change on L501 or 1365 or any other semi.

Something, something, something Dart Side...

That's good to know! Smile

It's just that there were reports of it billowing out a load of smoke as well as it giving very slow rides. Anyway, glad it's got no problems. Still a mighty fine machine! Smile
