Yes it is common practice at Ormskirk, even before the pandemic and changes to the timetables. More have taken place at Ormskirk though since the timetable change back in May 2018 when Maghull North opened with the peak morning services splitting at Ormskirk and more peak services in the afternoon forming and evening services splitting at Ormskirk.

Not quite sure the procedure, very rarely catch it myself but I think from what I remember they have to take the unit arriving into Ormskirk out of service, temporarily, while the coupling or uncoupling takes place.

When coupling the passenger train arrives at Ormskirk, unloads and goes out of service. Empty stock comes in on top under permissive working and couples. Doors are then reopened as a 6 car.

When splitting the 6 car will arrive, be detrained and split. The 3 car at the signal end will go out ecs and the 3 car at the buffer end as a passenger service.

It's a similar procedure at West Kirby and New Brighton.

Class 507/508s can't be coupled/split with passengers on board except in an emergency ie rescuing a failed train.

I remember back in 1991 when I was finishing off my yts course at the royal court theatre, a 6 coach train pulled in at rock ferry, only the doors on the rear 3 coaches opened but on this occasion ( I am in no way disputing at all what is stated as the procedure in post #3362 ) the train was split while the doors were open and people were boarding, however, as the units split, the doors on the rear unit automatically closed, the guard had not even touched the door close button but he did reopen the doors so that people still on the platform could board.

I will certainly say it did seem unusual for a train to split especially if the doors were open.

When I got off at liverpool central I spoke to the guard and he did tell me he was not happy that the split occured while passengers were boarding/alighting and also admitted straight up that the drivers should have waited until the doors had been closed before splitting the train.

Haha the railway was a very different place back in 1991!!

777 running during daylight hours commences on Thursday on the Southport line. 777010 is the unit allocated.

Merseyrail staff at Rail Live were confident of a December timetable change entry into service on one route.

The first route will be the Kirkby line, but December is premature in my view, probably May 2022

It doesnt have to , but the railway likes introducing things on specific dates , it really can garner publicity that way .

Im not a fan of the December timetable change , if something goes wrong with that one you drop yourself into a right debacle for Christmas.

Originally the May timetable was moved to June , but in recent years moved back to May.
