If you build something it requires Capital spending, which Whitehall/Westminster sees as "good", as it usually benefits floating voters, the business sector, strong lobbies - including the strongest lobby of all; the Media. Subsidy is current spending, which is automatically seen as bad as it benefits those with poor wealth and/or poor health, who in turn have no lobby, are despised (or simply denied) by the "Judas" Media and either always vote Labour, or increasingly (like me) consider the 10 minute walk to the Polling Station a total waste of 10 minutes. I'm shocked.... I actually completely agree with your last sentence |

As we approach the anniversary of the end of the War to End All Wars you need to think about that, unless you are female because they didn't get the right to vote until 1928. Absolute rubbish. You vote and still end up with a local or national government that you don't want. Sad fact is the current system is broken and needs overhauling. We have just had a local election in our ward as one of our councillors passed away suddenly back in may. Not one of the candidates standing bothered to go out and canvass for votes. Compare the turn out figures for the EU referendum to the figures for any general or local election in the last 10 years and you will see a massive difference. That to me says people arnt too lazy to go out and vote but are frustrated by what's on offer. |

Politics has absolutely everything to do with bus travel in greater Manchester at the moment with the proposed franchising and as brickmill has said Stagecoach attempting to bribe their way to retaining some kind of control! |

Are you saying that bus deregulation in 1986 and the dismemberment of GMPTE, the subsequent chaos that followed in Manchester and everywhere else outside of London and the current private monopolies that now exist and are only answerable to their shareholders isn't related to politics? The quality of the air that we breathe as we sit on a delayed bus in gridlocked traffic is ultimately the consequence of a political decision or, more likely, the lack of one. |

I’m saying cycle lanes, women’s suffrage and other unrelated guff is nothing to do with Stagecoach Manchester. Quite simply really. I’m aware that politics plays a part in bus operation but that doesn’t make everything political relevant to the thread! |

Cycle lanes have everything to do with the bus industry as it is a competing mode both financially and politically. |

Now, I'm agreeing wholeheartedly with you! This has to stop. But seriously, I recently calculated I have been entitled to vote at around 50 Elections (including two referenda) and I have been canvassed just ONCE. |

That's once more than me, but every constituency I've ever lived in has been a safe seat, some Tory, some Labour. I suspect they canvass more in marginals. |
