Apparently originally caused by a broken down freight train but made much worse after a signalling mistake almost caused a 323 to crash in to a Voyager, end result no southbound services for an extended period, which later led to no northbound trains for an extended period on many lines due to return workings also being cancelled. I was caught out at Liverpool Lime Street as a result. The 15.52 (IIRC) EMT train to Norwich was cancelled as a result of this incident. Quite why it could not have been rerouted via Brinnington or Hyde Central line is beyond me. |

Well looking at the problem solely from a business prospective no requirement for a guard on board reduces the chance of cancellations and delays. However, my understanding is the Northern DCO plan is for the new trains to be operated by a driver and an assistant with the driver doing all the operational work and the assistant focusing on revenue and customer service (including assisting disabled passengers), opposed to the plan being to run services with just a driver on board. |

Strange arrangement this evening on Liverpool - Preston service - journeys from Preston are showing up as terminating at Edge Hill but journeys towards Preston are showing as starting from Huyton. |

The big sticking point is that Northern will not guarantee a second person on every train, so there is the chance services will run with just a Driver on. SD. |
