I strongly suspect Scotrail will become nationalised come 2015, (Scottish Government) followed by the Wales & Borders franchise in 2018, (Welsh Assembly).

This franchising malarkey has gotten way out of control. I read the ATW franchise contracts recently and it makes the mind boggle.

The other thing to consider is that the West Coast bid may well delay the Great Western bid(s).

The West Coast will just revert to the bottom of the pile now , the plans for refranchising East Coast Great Western will now take precedent , it still could result in no virgin running West Coast as they really havent decided what goes on beyond December 9.

UPDATE:

All rail franchising has now been suspended!

Four franchises were due to be renewed next year – Essex Thameside (currently c2c), Greater Western, Thameslink and East Coast, but the letting processes are now suspended.

This just pushes the process nearer to Election day of 2014 , some even will come up for renewal after the General election in May 2015

That's probably true, BUT, as the person in charge at the time, surely she should have known.

You would expect a contract involving billions to be personally reviewed.
