Seems like there isnt much contingency these days where units could be swapped around to enable the high profile services to run and cancel some of the lesser services.

Probably what works against the Manchester Airport service is the path lost between Manchester Oxford Road and Manchester Airport if the service departs late from Liverpool finding a unit.

The 14:28 Liverpool Lime Street to Preston also started at Lime Street instead of South parkway

The unit suffered a fault on its inward journey at Euxton Balshaw Lane.

Probably if your going to suffer a fault with a unit you would prefer it to be there than in platform 4 at Wigan North Western with the consequent rerouting of southbound services via Platform 1 which for freights and express services would be time consuming.

Withdrawal of some school/college services which used to run in the last academic year perhaps?

Many North West lines have been seeing large increases in usage for the last 12 years so it's not unusual.

The problem is the passengers have increased but the stock they have to travel in has not increased in the mean time so , some services have been getting increasingly busier.

The problem gets to a crescendo when people start thinking im not going to stand for an inordinate length of time.
