Being of a certain age, I can still rattle off the number and destination of every LCPT route in Liverpool from 1-99 and most of the former Ribble services operating on Merseyside too. However, since 1986 routes and destinations have changed beyond all recognition and consequently there are many destinations that are no longer to be seen.

Who would have thought that such common-place destinations such as Pier Head, Seaforth and Old Haymarket would be consigned to the history books. You can add to that the three now long-gone depots of Edge Lane, Litherland and Walton.

Would anybody like to add to these examples?

On the Wirral we lost New Ferry and Seaview Rd Corporation garages as well as Crosville's West Kirby and Heswall depots. Abandoned route terminuses include Moreton Shore (77), Port Sunlight (51), Greasby (96), Thurstaston (74 and 96 - summer Sundays) and Park Station (Crosville West Kirby services).

I can remember MPTE St Helens division routes displaying Eccleston (Via Knowsley Road) or Eccleston (Vis Dentons Green). Also remember the Swifts having 2 line display, so on the 22 it would read Eccleston on the top line and Dodd Avenue on the Bottom line - Happy days indeed!

Yeah the 341 used to terminate at Robbins island the bus stop is still there in the middle but it just says on it that no services call at this stop. Until very recently the timetable for the 341 was still displayed in the bus stop at the Black Bull! Not sure if its still there but it was there a good few years after the service had been withdrawn and some people used to ask me what time it turned up leaving me to explain that the service no longer operated and Merseytravel had just forgot to remove the timetable!

They where all short destinations of some of the popular routes , these days the companies go for uncomplicated timetables .

Most destinations on the original Ribble blinds are now obsolete - Mile End; Rotunda; Walton Church; Black Bull; Aintree Depot; Alt Garage; Maghull )Dodds Lane); Park Lane Lodge; Green Lane; Coach & Horses; Lydiate; Robbins Island; Halsall Church; Shirdley Hill; and on the Melling routes - Aintree Altway; Horse & Jockey; Melling (Rock Lane); Pear Tree; Hen & Chickens; Cunscough Lane; Derby Arms. Bringing back memories Barney?

Yes indeed. What is worth noting about several of these now-defunct destinations is that they refer to churches or public houses. In the 1950s and 60s it was still considered perfectly acceptable to get the bus to the pub rather than drive or get a taxi as is the case now. The Ribble 52 from Spellow Lane to Sefton Church actually served both. If you didn't fancy the religious service you could always go into The Punch Bowl next to it. Ha!
