Cancelling services in advance seems to becoming more common, but must be a tactic that works

If you think about it, its the logical thing to do.
Cancel trains well in advance with lots of publicity - people get the message not to travel unless they have to.
Do nothing and then cancel everything when the job grinds to a halt - you have lots of stranded passengers....

There is a run for a 350/4 to Edinburgh booked for Thursday 12th as follows:

5S96 1523 Preston C.S. to Edinburgh due 1846
5M98 1903 Edinburgh to Preston C.S due 2234

Assume it will be 350401 (if it is not cancelled before then!)

RE: First Transpennine Express
Some good news from the May 2014 timetable change for Liverpool!

The new Liverpool-Newcastle services will be starting and are timetabled as follows:

Sunday
09:12, 10:03, 11:12 then every hour at xx:12 until 19:12, 20:22*.
(*) = via Warrington Central

Monday-Friday
06:12, then every hour at xx:12 until 16:12, 17:10, 18:12, 19:12, 20:22*
-----------

Typical calling pattern:
Manchester Victoria, Huddersfield, Leeds, York, Northallerton, Darlington, Durham, Chester-le-Street and Newcastle.

Journey time is 3h 03m, which I think is pretty respectable. Trains arrive at xx:15 into Newcastle, with Edinburgh/Glasgow trains leaving at around xx:30, so potentially a nicer way to travel to Scotland from Liverpool.

Journey time from Liverpool to Manchester Victoria is now only 32 minutes, and this includes 2 minutes make up time, so is likely going to be 30mins, or less. I really think this will be a very popular route.

Traction will normally be doubled up Class 185 units, so 6-car, but single Class 350/4 may appear from time to time, when more electrification work is completed.

Travel is glamorous only in retrospect.

Still think the omission of St Helens Junction is a major mistake. I'll look forward to watching the 185's thundering past whilst waiting for slower Northern service. With 2 minutes make up time, there is no excuses.

If it was going to stop anywhere else it should be Newton-le-Willows, people from Chester/North Wales could change just once at a nice easy station like NLW, same platform interchange rather than having to navigate their way around Manchester. As it is, the TPE service runs 2½ minutes in front of the ATW service meaning that such a connection can't be made.

Travel is glamorous only in retrospect.
