This type, but very, very rarely.

Takes a while to grind, and very few places available to stable it, so grinding is usually done during a week long possession. Sometimes it is easier (and cheaper) just to relay the rail.

I am now absolutely convinced that this report has effectively cemented DOO being implemented sooner rather than later. Ref: Points 60a, 60b, 61c in the report.

I suspect, short term, Platform Train Dispatch may be implemented as a result. I wonder whether, long term, instead of making guards redundant, they could give (some of) them a role as a safety critical train dispatcher on various platforms.

They seem keen for the person who dispatches the train to be able to immediately stop the train by having the train brake controls immediately to hand. The only person who can do that instantly is the driver.

(Also interesting that RAIB refer to it as a "fatal accident")

Are they not still used on occasions, such as stabling over Christmas? I know they are visited on that Arriva Trains Merseyside route learner video on YouTube, although even back then, were very rarely used.

They will see use during the comissioning process for the new units whenever that happens as Merseyrail will need all available space , as there is 59 service units to fit around any extra units stabling will have to take place where stabling may not take place under normal operating conditions , but we are some way away from that at the moment .

Pardon my ignorance but whats a DOO? I tried going back a few pages to see if it was explained but to no luck.
