From 26.10.86, the privatised bus companies could do whatever they wanted.

I think more likely as to not to undermine the ferries, rather than getting passengers to use the trains, the ferries were quite frequent then ran from 05.30[06.20 from Birkenhead] until midnight. There is large areas of Wirral & in particular Wallasey that are nowhere near a station, but quite easy to put a bus on & connect with the ferry, the ferry still is a pleasant way to travel[if the river isn't too roughLaugh] more so then when they ran all day

As for pre d-reg tunnel buses, there was only a 2 day routes both started in the 70s, both routes had different routes in Liverpool City Centre peak & off peak, with a night tunnel route, which was the only bus route to use the Birkenhead tunnel, routes were
31/32 New Brighton-Seaview Road Garage-Liverpool
418/419 Heswall-Liverpool, this operated non stop Pensby Sparks Lane-Liverpool via M53 & Wallasey tunnel
94/94A Birkenhead-Liverpool night tunnel bus

The routes in Liverpool, off peak route 31/419 was
Scotland Road, Juvenal Street, St Anne Street, Norton Street, London Road, Lime Street, St Johns Lane, Roe Street, Hood Street Gyrotory, Whitechapel, Lord Street, North John Street, Dale Street, Exchange Street East, Tithebarn Street, Great Crosshall Street, Byrom Street, Scotland Road

Peak route 32/418 was
Scotland Road, Byrom Street, Old Haymarket, Whitechapel, Crosshall Street, Dale Street, then as off peak route

RE: Crosville on the Wirral
In 1924 a Crosville route started Birkenhead Park-West Kirby, one route via Claughton-Upton-Greasby-Newton then Grange Cross Lane & Column Road to West Kirby another route formed via Moreton-Meols-Hoylake, with many journey's operating as a circular.

Autumn 1959 this changed to
F34 Birkenhead Park-Liscard via West Kirby
F37/F38/F39 Birkenhead Park-West Kirby/Newton
There was also an F32 introduced via Greenbank Road then & current 437, peak hours only

1979 this changed to
81/82 West Kirby-Woodside via Upton-Claughton
PTE covered the Moreton section by extending the 7/8 & 28 to West Kirby & Newton to become
7/8 New Brighton-Newton
28 Mill Park-West Kirby

In December 1985 there was a major reorganisation of routes, West Kirby was one of the areas affected by the changes, 7/8, & 81/82 were withdrawn, 28 cut back to Moreton & renumbered 40, new routes 37/37A/38/39 introduced, which were
37/37A New Brighton-Woodside via West Kirby, this was a joint PTE/Crosville service, Crosville operated short peaks West Kirby-Woodside, & some evening & Sunday journey's, 37A was evening & Sundays covering the 38/39, the 37 replaced the 81 as well as 7 & 8
39/39 Woodside-West Kirby Circular, Crosville service Monday to Saturday daytime only, this replaced the 28 & 82

Orrysdale Road, Bridge Road to Column Road was railway sidings, with a station for the Birkenhead Railway until the 50s, the through road wasn't built until the early 80s.
