Prone to overheating in hotter months and weren't very efficient in fuel consumption either.

could the withdrawal of 2730 be the reason why 2594 is here

2730 would have been due to go anyway, maybe 2594 is the replacement but I would have thought 2902 would be the real replacement but obviously can't be let go by GL just yet.

Possibly, but the awarding of some schools on emergency contract may also be the answer

Obviously it's not the real replacement what I meant was it's probably on loan to cover 2730s place untill 2963 gets repaired or 2902 turns up from Green Lane and I'm pretty sure 2580 is going to Birkenhead at some point.
