D&G Bus

The elevation of the rear seats seems more than on other vehicles, which does a better job of hiding the rear wheel, but perhaps reduced the external view a bit. One vehicle I was on had automated announcements playing, the other didn't. I felt they sounded louder than the ones I've heard on WOB services.

I also was on one of their Slimline Solos on the 88 route yesterday - the first time in a few years I've caught one of those. They really aren't the right vehicles for longer services. As well as the very firm seating, there's a lack of space between the seats and the side of the bus, so they will be very uncomfortable for anyone making a longer journey on a busy bus. A big contrast to their 2 x 68 reg MMCs, that have comfortable seats and a bit of leg room - if you choose the right seat.

I saw one of the Evoras at Crewe Bus Station yesterday, about to take up service on route 38. It seemed identical to Evoras at Cannock c/o ChaseRider which I rode last July.

I was initially due to ride route 38 yesterday, but then decide to avoid Macclesfield to track down a TfW Rail 230 on the Wirral instead.

Just searched for a Chaserider Evora on YouTube. The interior looks identical to the D&G ones used on the 38, even the same pattern on the seat covers and same colour grab handles. Although, I also observed a YouTube video of one of the "Yellow 9" Evoras shows different colour seat covers and grab handles.

RE: D&G Bus
504 tracking on the 42 today. Did the original North Western Road Car go as far south as Crewe?

Yeah, they operated the Crewe to Macclesfield as the 24. There was also a 145 Northwich to Crewe via Middlewich and Sandbach, joint with Crosville.

They also ran a Saturday 172 from Crewe to Congleton via Hassall Green. That had been cut back to a Crewe to Hassall Green K72 under Crosville, ending in the early days of deregulation.

Thanks. I knew about the second version of North Western, but all I could find out about the original version was they had Cheshire bases in Altrincham, Wilmslow and Macclesfield, and took over another operator based in Northwich.

RE: D&G Bus
For the second time in 2 weeks one of the ex-Cardiff MMCs has appeared on the morning 188 school run. They appear overcrowded when they are running it but I think that's partly down to standing school children not moving down the bus. Do Cheshire East inspect these kind of things? I'm sure the contract was supposed to be for a min seating capacity of 35, which means vehicle 504 is well within the requirements, but if they're using that one elsewhere or it's not-in-service, the suitable alternatives are limited. I know Cheshire West keep a close eye on the 48 route on schooldays, which is another one where most of the journeys could be operated by a smaller vehicle but the ones carrying the scholars need plenty of seats.

The morning 188 is usually the same vehicle that works the 14:35 Knutsford to Altrincham 88, which I think is now the one the St Ambrose scholars use to get to Altrincham.

No worries. I've got their 1971 summer timetable book, so that's where the info comes from. I think Hanley was the furthest south they got on the route from Buxton.

The Timetable World website has the 1967/68 timetable available to view:-

Interesting how many late and Sunday services there are, compared to now. You'd expect Sunday services to be better now, considering how many more places open on Sunday. I also suspect some people in Middlewich would welcome a limited direct service to Manchester again. If a direct Knutsford to Congleton service still existed, I would have used it quite a few times over the past 2 years.

Thank you for your assurance. Conversely, I may quite like to ride a Yellow 9 Evora next time I am in the area. This is unlikely to be this year as I have only just been to Crewe.

RE: D&G Bus
Visited my mum in Crewe today, so we had reason to use the number 8 up to the Retail Park, and it sounds like D&G have had a lot of unhappy customers. Only one bus running on what is supposed to be a half hourly service much of the day by all accounts.
My poor old mum just a bus home at about 1.40, didn't get back til near 4pm. Apparently there was a driver change, and the new driver insisted on taking his break, so it missed out yet another run to Wistaston Green meaning a two hour gap between journeys.
Apparently, this isn't the first time this has happened on the number 8 either. And then they wonder why passenger numbers are on the decline....
