I would guess at perhaps Maytree trying to get some more customers between Bolton and Westhoughton, given that they run the evening and Sunday service on the 715. The re-routing to Westhoughton also means that Maytree will compete with SLT between Westhoughton, Middlebrook and Horwich with the 126/516/517 service (Maytree also running the 516 Monday-Saturday evenings). The 680 will see another route against SLT between Shakerley, Atherton and Leigh with SLT's 683-685 services.
