Whatever the reason for these huge bailouts, the bald fact is that they exist and bus operators would cease to trade without them. Outside of London, most services are running at less than 60% than normal loadings and in some cases far lower than that.

Also, it is almost impossible to accurately identify where a person contracts this virus so, yes, there is no indisputable evidence that bus travel is an issue in this respect. However, many bus operators currently have a staffing issue maintaining services because of the virus and several dozen front-line public transport workers have died of the virus.
