From 26.10.86, the privatised bus companies could do whatever they wanted. I think more likely as to not to undermine the ferries, rather than getting passengers to use the trains, the ferries were quite frequent then ran from 05.30[06.20 from Birkenhead] until midnight. There is large areas of Wirral & in particular Wallasey that are nowhere near a station, but quite easy to put a bus on & connect with the ferry, the ferry still is a pleasant way to travel[if the river isn't too rough ![]() As for pre d-reg tunnel buses, there was only a 2 day routes both started in the 70s, both routes had different routes in Liverpool City Centre peak & off peak, with a night tunnel route, which was the only bus route to use the Birkenhead tunnel, routes were 31/32 New Brighton-Seaview Road Garage-Liverpool 418/419 Heswall-Liverpool, this operated non stop Pensby Sparks Lane-Liverpool via M53 & Wallasey tunnel 94/94A Birkenhead-Liverpool night tunnel bus The routes in Liverpool, off peak route 31/419 was Scotland Road, Juvenal Street, St Anne Street, Norton Street, London Road, Lime Street, St Johns Lane, Roe Street, Hood Street Gyrotory, Whitechapel, Lord Street, North John Street, Dale Street, Exchange Street East, Tithebarn Street, Great Crosshall Street, Byrom Street, Scotland Road Peak route 32/418 was Scotland Road, Byrom Street, Old Haymarket, Whitechapel, Crosshall Street, Dale Street, then as off peak route My Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/31135444@N02/ |
