Indeed Lime St to Airport will continue to Crewe so has to be an EMU service, as a DMU would accelerate too slowly and get in the way of long distance trains. Northern planned to run Wigan to Bolton to Alderley Edge and Wigan to Bolton to Stalybridge electric trains as DfT required franchise bidders to effectively use overheads where possible. As they didn't plan to obtain bi-modes and there was no requirement for Southport to Bolton to Piccadilly services to continue, the franchise agreement didn't include a Southport to Airport service at the first major recast. |
