RE: Arriva St Helens Paint Shop & Repair Centre
Some people like pulsars some don't and that is their right, opinions will differ about how long they will last, I can think of a few pulsars that are knackered already. As for darts, some of them have been knackered for quite a number of years, some of the Darts are not seeing 15 years either. Look at 7622 for example that barely saw 12 years if that.

It's not really a question of like or dislike though. The question was whether or not the Pulsars will last 15 years and the obvious answer is yes, they will. There is absolutely no reason why not.

The 2201-2262 batch of Darts which offered a terrible ride quality from a young age and are cheaply built are only just starting to be withdrawn now at the age of over 14. Those that have recently gone could last longer as well.

The question of like or dislike will influence some people's view of how long pulsars will last, that is inevitable. I agree that some darts that have been withdrawn could have lasted longer, equally I can think of some that could have went some time ago. With the 2201-2262 darts, well some have been terrible riders for a long time.

What I'd like to know is do the same people who think Pulsars won't make 15 years think the similar Commanders will suffer a similar fate. Given that the Commanders seem a lot more popular on the forum than the Pulsars when some of the former are similarly rough.

My view on the Pulsars' longevity has nothing to do with liking them or not - I think they are OK but nothing more - rather the fact that they are designed for a service life of at least 15 years and have been so popular with Arriva. Essentially, if the Darts can do it, why not the Pulsars?

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of pulsars but that doesn't mean that I don't think that they will last or indeed be made to last, but the like or dislike will cloud some peoples judgement, just the way some people are.
The commander point is a good one, and equally there are some dodgy ones about, they will probably see out their time.

I must admit, I didn't think the X-ANC Darts would see out 15 years for a long time as some have been just awful from not far off new. Credit where due though, they've made it with relatively little fuss. That's not to say the passengers haven't suffered from their crashy rides and tough seating of course and the same argument would apply to the Ultralows and Myllenniums.

The seating on the Darts and mylleniums does not help the ride quality one bit, urban 90 seating is appalling. Crashing and banging is par for the course on those buses but they are not alone. Problems for the Darts has partly been due to them being used on routes that they really weren't designed for.

The Ultralows were actually quite comfortable. Would rather the seats in these than the 2201 - 2262 Darts anyday.

Speaking of what kind of vehicles people like I know for a fact that there's a driver at St Helen's Depot that had quite a soft spot for 7622 from what I remember when it and he was at Bolton and he would regularly get it for his let 360s, it would get to the stage that if he had anything different we would ask him what he'd done with his pet toy
