Reminder to forum users:

James St Platform 1 (Liverpool Arrivals from Wirral) has now closed and will not re open until 6th January 2013 .

James St Platform 3 (Departures to Wirral) will still remain open during this time .

Due to the inability to use Platform 1 for turnback purposes in the event of service disruption on the Liverpool Loop where services would have turned back at James Street other plans may have to be used as it is hard to turn a 14 trains an hour railway at James St with only 1 platform.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens when the Northern Line platform at Moorfields is closed. Platform 2 especially is so busy during rush hour it's likely to cause absolute chaos when the closure takes place. With luck, they'll do it one platform at a time and be as quick as possible to reduce the inconvenience.

I understand the funding is not yet in place for Moorfields or Hamilton Square but they are expecting it for the start of 2014.

If this did happen could they just use platforms 2 & 3 for turn round and ignore the loop with a rail replacement service.

No theres no pointwork or signalling to allow turnbacks at platform 3.
What will happen in the event of emergency turnbacks is the West Kirbys and Chesters will turn back at James Street platform 2 with the New Brightons turning back at Birkenhead North and the Ellesmere Ports at Birkenhead Central.

You cannot access platform 3 at James Street from the Hamilton Squire direction only Platforms 1 & 2.

If platform 1 is shut you only have access to platform 2 hence the quote "it's IMPOSSIBLE".

I would have thought they will terminate the new brighton trains at north, leaving 10 trains per hour, which gives you 6 minutes turnaround for each train at james st,

Not as simple as that , wish it was though . 8 Trains an hour is about the maximum one platform could cope with but everything has to run like clockwork , one train out of sequence time wise and even that would go out of the window.
