What number is the fourth platform then ?

Platform 3 is the up to Liverpool
Platform 2 is the up to Chester
Platform 1 is the bay

So explain where is this fourth platform , your thinking the track near the booking office it is the link to the sidings officially to the north of the station . The royal train uses this when a member of the royal family is north west england .

It's still a platform regardless of whether it has a number or not...

Ok then i would be interested to know if there was an operational incident on this platform what they would call it . Merseyrail's bermuda Triangle platform ..

The map of Hooton station on the National Rail website clearly shows four platforms

Looking at RTT, it shows that Liverpool bound trains will run from both P3 and P2 which will really confuse people. Also looking at RTT, all services will have 2 minutes at Hooton before going back (I would assume most train staff will 'step back' as 2 minutes isn't long when the platform will be so crowded). Chester trains arrive and then you have 1 minute to run over the bridge to P3 or 9 minutes until the next Liverpool train comes into P2.



It is very confusing. Why give 2 minutes for trains to turn around but use two platforms? Surely it would be easier to use the 1 platform to direct everyone the same way and use queueing systems. I personally would make them alight on 2 and then go onto the Eport branch and turn round there. Simple queueing system, utilising all platforms. Enables guards and drivers to change ends properly and not trying to battle through crowds.

It wouldn't be called anything as it isn't electrified so merseyrail couldn't use it if they wanted to. According to Raildar it is known as the 'excursion platform'.

It's actually known as platform 0 and even though is sees no traffic is still classed as officially in use

During the Giants all trains from Liverpool had approx 8 mins of stand time at Hooton.

When the Chester train arrived from Chester a liverpool train was booked to depart at the same time from Platform 3 but this wasnt a booked connection , the booked connection would be from platform 2 which then had 8 mins to wait before departure .

Today marks 40 years since the Class 507s entered passenger service. Fittingly, 507001, the unit which worked the first passenger service back on 1st November 1978, was my train to work this morning. It formed the 08.13 Southport - Hunts Cross service with 508104.
