It's annoying only the cross Town routes run through St Helens Town centre, i miss the days when the 34/320 used to run through to/ from Liverpool.

Can't agree more and the lack of Express/Limited Stop services also makes journeys today very long and tedious, although having said that they have probably been quicker than relying on the trains recently.

Yep the old 34 took 45 minutes Liverpool-St Helens[320 took 45-50 minutes as well], the modern 10 takes 65 minutes, always remember when i was on it we were always early too, also the case of arriving early at Earlstown, Newton Le Willows, Leigh & Astley

RE: Route History
Been looking at the 1, St Helens-Atherton, on the face of it that was a bizarre pointlless route, much of the route covered by other routes mainly 32 Hindley-Atherton & 320 Platt Bridge-St Helens, also interesting the LUT Atherton depot was the Southside of Atherton towards Leigh, the GM Buses depot i'm familiar with was near the rail station on the Northside of Atherton.

Come to think about it, in 70s & 80s St Helens had a few companies operating in the area, you had MPTE, GMPTE, LUT, Crosville & Ribble.

RE: Route History
Come to think of it, I am surprised the 1 was never extended to Bolton given the area was LUT's empire. Would have been a straight forward and very useful route.

Come to think of it,at the height of the MTL/GM Buses wars, when the 10 was extended to operate Liverpool-Manchester, didn't that follow the old 1 from St Helens to Atherton then to Bolton, & via the 56 to Manchester?

Think it did but it followed the then 12 route between Bolton and Manchester.

Some reason i thought it was the 36 the 10 followed, i'd love to see the 10 timetable from that era though.
