RE: Northern (Arriva Rail North)
150137 returned from Crewe LNW to Newton Heath yesterday, in new Northern livery. ; I'm sure read somewhere a previously outshopped 150 had been returned as unsatisfactory, but its not in the GMPTA minutes where I thought it was. |

I'm not convinced that the minor accelerations to the semi-fasts will produce a better return than having a half-hourly, instead of hourly, service at the stations skipped. . |

A rough calculation shows the Mid-Cheshire line has around 9300 services per annum, each calling at every station between Mouldsworth and Navigation Road. On average that means at Knutsford 55 passengers board or alight a train which stops there, while at Ashley it's 0.8 passengers. If a station can't get an average of 1 passenger boarding or alighting every service how can an increase in provision be justified and what benefits could it possibly deliver? It appears the semi-fast will only have around a 15 minute turnaround time, so making the service call at more stations might have a negative effect on punctuality (as delays are less likely to be recovered.) W More importantly, considering the distance between Northwich and Manchester and how long the train takes faster services are required, but a semi-fast using a 75mph DMU won't go far enough towards that. |

I thought it was the refurbished 158 that Northern management were unhappy with and heard that they were looking at fitting the type of seats some people refer to as 'ironing boards' to them (but with some extra padding), rather than trying to refurbish the existing seats. |

RE: Northern (Arriva Rail North)
Northern have published the track access amendment application for this December. There is now to be an off-peak half hourly Manchester-Blackburn service, which wasn't in the proposals I had seen. Also included are calls by Airport services at Patricroft and at Low Moor by Leeds-Hebden Bridge ( by which I presume they mean either Victoria or Blackpool) services. Low Moor is perhaps interesting on two counts - one being that having been in a boxed note in the NRT for years, now it's open it's completely absent, and the other being that when Grand Central applied to call there they made a point of the fact there was only currently one tph there, while the plans had promised two. http://archive.nr.co.uk/browseDirectory....uly%202017 |
