Absolutely echo the 47/48 suggestions. Loads much better than the 1 despite being slightly less frequent, and a lot of people make lengthy journeys on it where the wi-fi and comfy seats would be a welcome relief. Stagecoach do very well on their X2 and definitely take passengers who could easily use Merseyrail instead. Quite a common journey seems to be Liverpool to Weld Road in Birkdale, right next to Birkdale station. They're hardly going to be tempted into using Arriva given the present situation of lightweight single deckers with ordinary seats.
